What's the deal with first person?

I just received four books as a gift. My friend knows I like mystery/suspense type books so I was looking forward to diving in. When I opened the first one I found that it was written in first person. I shrugged it off and went to the next one. First person. Three out of the four are first person. What's the deal with that? I'm not a fan of first person. If I wanted first person I would read a diary. And I've been noticing as I do research for my vampire book that a lot of paranormals are first person. I hope that doesn't mean I have to write in first person to sell one of them. I don't know that I could. Sure for blogs and diaries it's okay, but for a whole book it starts to annoy me. It's one of the first things I look for. Cover, back cover blurb, first page. If it's in first person I put it back on the shelf and go for the next book that catches my eye. I guess I should never say never. One of these days I might find first person is the best way to tell one of my stories. But for right now she's going to stick with third because it's fun getting into everyone's head. Not just one.

Buffy, again

With the snow days on the weekend I needed something to do. I'm not a winter person so going out to play in all that disgusting white stuffwasn't really an option. Plus it was way too cold and blowy. Buffy to the rescue. I never get tired of watching that show. When I writeI like to have something on in the background, something I've seen and don't have to pay attention to. I need noise or I can't concentrate on the story. Weird, I know, but there it is. Anyway, I popped in then end of Season 4. I had started re-watching it months ago and hadn't finished. Then popped in Season 5. Except, I was paying attention. You have to when it's Buffy. Is it just me, or can you discover something new eachtime you watch it? Joss Whedon is a genius in my opinion. I wish he would write more.

So tonight when I start working on the book I'll have to put something else on. And save Buffy for the weekend when I can take a break from thebook.

Nope. Not hot in here.

Anybody watch Moonlight? If you watch the show you know that Mick (he's a vampire for those who don't watch the show) sleeps in a freezer. Yesterday I felt like I was working in a freezer. They must have thought we were all the undead or something. With a temperature of -11 (that's 12 degrees Fahrenheit) outside you'd think they would have the heat blasting inside. Nope. I think they actually had the air conditioning on. At least that's what if felt like. We sat at our desks wearing our coats all day. You would think after all these years they'd be able to get the heat right. I don't care that the building used to be a warehouse and they didn't really need to worry about how cold it was. People use it now. People have been using it for more than five years. And still we have days in the winter where we all feel like ice cubes.

Here's hoping they at least have the heat on today. I'm bringing a snowsuit to work just in case.

BookEnds Contest

Well, I did it. I entered the first 100 words of my vampire novel in the BookEnds contest. Already there are a ton of entries. Reading all the mystery entries was fun. It's too bad I don't write in any of the remaining categories. At least I had something for the Paranomral one. Regardless of what happens, I'm having fun writing this book. I hope it will be the first in a series of vampire novels.

I'm off to get more work done on it, just in case.

I'm home!

~Cough~, ~cough~, ~cough~

Wow, for a new place it's pretty dusty in here.

I've finally launched my new website and my blog! I write paranormals (vampire, ghost, time travels so far) and futuristics. I'm sure the road to publication will be long but I'm up for it. There's nothing I'd rather do than tell a good story, with gret characters. And if I scare my readers while I'm at it, so much the better.

When I get a little more settled in my new cyber home, I'll be back to chat. Right now, I'm off to tweak my website again.
